Why Ruin Another Life by Anthony Weathers is based on true events. At a very young age, Marva’s mother sold her to an elderly man, Roshield. She attended school while doing her chores and looking after her daughter. After Roshield died, Marva stayed with her friend, Novella, and her mother until she could stand on her own two feet.

Marva was reluctant at first to agree to marry Boyd, but even after Novella warned her against him, Marva still married Boyd. Raylene, Marva’s eldest daughter, had to look after her siblings while her mother had two jobs. It was not long before Raylene caught Boyd’s attention, and he stopped her from having friends. Marva’s mother’s decision years ago caused a series of events that permanently changed the course of Marva’s and Raylene’s lives.

Anthony Weathers’ compelling and emotional book, Why Ruin Another Life, is about the dysfunctional dynamics of multiple generations within a family. This page-turner had me enthralled from the beginning, and I couldn’t put it down. The writing style gave life to the characters, and I lost myself in Marva’s and her children’s lives and circumstances.

The characters were likable and relatable because of their complexity and authenticity. Marva’s children suffered greatly as a result of the trauma she experienced by being sold by her mother, which had a profound effect on her children. The storyline is intertwined with themes of domestic abuse, violence, redemption, optimism, and important lessons.

The book is captivating and well-written, and I will remember it for a very long time.
