Childhood traumas, including mental and sexual abuse, can have profound and lasting effects on individuals that persist into adulthood. These experiences can shape people’s beliefs about themselves, others, and the world around them.
They can influence emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and even physical health. Individuals who have experienced these traumas may develop PTSD, depression, and other disorders, which can manifest through intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance.
It can profoundly impact self-esteem and emotional wellness, leading to feelings of inadequacy, shame, guilt, and self-doubt and affecting one’s ability to make rational and sound decisions. This resonates with me, so I’d like to share a scene from the book Why Ruin Another Life that captures a traumatic scene for Marva that hugely impacts her life.
